Le Fil (The Thread) Exhibition

A group exhibition featuring new artwork by twelve artists who deconstruct and re-address materials, processes and designs relating to the textile industry. A connecting conceptual thread runs between the artists’ works linking how we value fabrics from the contemporary, to the traditional and ancient. Textiles can be warm and comforting; they can communicate glamour and wealth, they can also convey cultural, national or religious significance.

Participating artists include Hannah Bertram, Linden Braye, Sophia Egarchos, Kath Fries, Michelle Heldon, Sahar Hosseinabadi, Chrissie Ianssen, Shannon Johnson, Michele Morcos, Jade Pegler, Megan Yeo (pictured) and Melinda Young.

Fabrication exhibition

Fabrication is the first solo exhibition by textile/mixed media artist Martin Roberts . Coming from a background in costume and fashion, Martin has taken techniques and ideas from these disciplines and evolved them into a more contemporary visual context. The exhibition is a mix of illustrative and abstract textile imagery, layers of fabric applique and acrylics built up over each other and stitched together tell a personal story of people, places and events.

Martin Roberts is an Irish born textile and mixed media artist based in Sydney. He has an extensive background in costume and fashion, having worked in these fields throughout Europe and Australia for 15 years. His artwork is a continuation of his work with textiles, an evolution of traditional techniques and ideas placed into a more contemporary visual context. He combines layers of fabric collage and paint as a medium creating both 2 and 3 dimensional works. “Everyone has a different story to tell. I take inspiration from moments in my life, from the people, places and events that I see in it.”

Jewellery pieces by Ghost & Lola

thewhitebook is proud to announce it’s first Fashion Exhibition to be held at Gaffa Gallery in Sydney’s Surry Hills from Thursday 24 April to Tuesday 6 May 2008, falling during Australian Fashion Week.

Gaffa has been chosen as the venue for the exhibition as it is an artist-managed gallery committed to providing a creative space for emerging artists and designers and is supported by the Australian Council for the Arts.

Labels including Vicious Threads, Charmaine Baltis, Smena, Mwasi Kitoko, Ghost & Lola, Premonition, Alexi Freeman, BelleBika, Limedrop, Kanchi and Lady will present pieces from their Spring Summer 2008/09 collections in an intimate and innovative environment.

This unique exhibition aims to create greater awareness and exposure for labels to a fashion, art and design loving audience, most of whom often do not have the opportunity to be involved in the usually industry only fashion week events.
